Introduction to Criminal Justice
• Criminal Justice represents a system of practices and institutions designed
to uphold social order, deter crime, and administer justice (Martin &
Zettler, 2021)
• The system encompasses various agencies, including Police Departments,
the Courts, and Correctional Facilities
• Crucial functions of these agencies are
Maintaining public safety
Upholding justice and fairness
Enhancing rehabilitation and reentry into society
• This presentation covers three positions in criminal justice that I would
work in: Probation Officer, Correctional Officer, and Law Enforcement
Officer
1. Probation Officer
• One of the positions I would committedly work in is that of a
probation officer
• This officer works in the probation department
• Their first responsibility in the flow of the criminal justice process is
providing advisory reports to the Court when determining bail and
bond (Harris, 2022)
• After an offender is sentenced, the probation officer supervises them
if placed on probation or parole
• Collaboration with other criminal justice professionals helps in
coordinating efforts and sharing information
Probation Officer Employment
• Probation officers can work with the following agencies
Probation department
Courts
Federal Probation and Pretrial Services
• Qualifications for the position include:
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice
Pass a competency exam
Pass a criminal background check
Pass a pre-employment drug test
• The national average annual wage for probation officers working for local
governments is $60,250 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023)
California offers the highest annual salary - $94,650
Probation Officer Career Outlook
• Employment opportunities for probation officers are expected to
increase, with 7,400 openings annually (Bureau of Labor Statistics,
2023)
• The position also has several advancement opportunities;
Experienced probation officers may advance to senior or supervisory
positions within their agencies
Probation supervisors with leadership skills can advance to managerial roles
One may also pursue specialized roles such as working with juveniles or
offenders with mental health issues (Martin & Zettler, 2021)
• The position has a promising future for all persons aspiring to work as
probation officers
2. Correctional Officer
• The second position I would participate in criminal justice is that of a
correctional officer
• This position refers to a professional within the criminal justice system
responsible for maintaining security and order within correctional
facilities (Evers et al., 2020)
• They oversee the activities of imamates and enforce compliance with
facility rules and regulations
• They are closely related to probation officers but have different roles;
• While probation officers work with individuals on parole, correctional officers
supervise those who are incarcerated within correctional facilities
Correctional Officer Employment
• The average annual wage of correctional officers in the United States is
$49,610 (U.S. Department of Labor, 2023)
• Factors influencing salary include geographical location (officers in urban
areas earn higher because of higher costs of living) and experience
• Qualifications for the position include:
High school diploma or equivalent for entry-level positions
Age requirement depending on the state (some 18 and others 21 years)
Pass a physical fitness assessment
Pass drug screening
• A correctional officer can work in State Departments of Corrections,
County Sheriff’s Offices, or Private Corrections Companies
Correctional Officer Career Outlook
• The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected 30,900 job openings annually
for correctional officers over this decade (U.S. Department of Labor,
2023)
These openings will largely result from population growth and the need to
replace officers who transfer to other occupations
• There are several opportunities for career advancement:
Promotions to supervisory or managerial positions within one’s agency
Advanced degrees and specialized certifications, such as leadership skills, can
secure a correctional officer a higher-level position
• Reforms such as emphasis on rehabilitation suggest a more inclusive
and progressive corrections system (Evers et al., 2020)
3. Police Officer (Law Enforcement)
• A trained professional responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining
public order within their jurisdiction
• They have the authority to investigate crimes, apprehend suspects,
and uphold the rule of law
• They investigate crimes by gathering evidence, interviewing
witnesses, and apprehending suspects for prosecution
• They also patrol communities and respond to emergencies to ensure
the safety and security of residents
• Police officer collaborate prosecutors and attorneys to prepare cases
and testify in court proceedings to ensure justice is served
Police Officer Employment
• The average annual wage for police is $69,160 (United States Department of
Labor, 2023)
• The salary varies depending on factors such as the rank, level of government,
and years of experience
• Agencies that Can Employ Law Enforcement Officers:
Federal Agencies – like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
State Police
Local Police Departments – municipal police and county sheriff's offices
Specialized Units such as SWAT teams
• Qualifications for Law Enforcement Officers:
High school diploma or equivalent
A comprehensive training program at a police academy
Background check
Physical fitness
Career Outlook (Police Officers)
• Employment opportunities are projected to grow 3 percent by 2032 –
about 64,500 openings annually (United States Department of Labor, 2023)
• Job security is generally stable because is a continuous demand for their
services to maintain public safety and order
• Soft skills required for this career include effective communication, conflict
resolution, empathy, and critical thinking
• Police officers have diverse opportunities for career development and
advancement:
Pursue specialized roles in areas such as narcotics, cybercrime, and crisis negotiation
Advance to supervisory and command-level positions within their agencies
Pursue advanced training and certifications in areas such as criminal justice
administration and forensic science
Motivation for the Three Positions
• The three positions align with my passion for serving the public and
making a positive impact in the lives of vulnerable people – in this case,
offenders desiring to reenter society
• My commitment to community safety has also been crucial – I believe in a
safe environment where people can thrive socially, economically, and
politically
Undoubtedly, security issues undermine growth
• Interests in rehabilitation motivate me to foster an accommodating
environment where every person gets a chance to reform
Helping offenders address underlying issues such as substance abuse and supporting
them to lead a lawful life will be fulfilling my desire for a just and considerate society
Other Positions in Criminal Justice
• In addition to the three positions covered in this presentation, there are
other occupations one can work in criminal justice:
• Forensic Scientist – Analyzes physical evidence collected from crime scenes
using scientific techniques
• Victim Advocate – Provides support, information, and assistance to victims
throughout the criminal justice process
They help victims understand their rights, access resources, and navigate the legal
system
• Criminal Investigator – Conducts investigations into criminal activities
They gather evidence, interview suspects and witnesses, and analyze information to
build cases for identifying and arresting perpetrators
The prosecution relies on this evidence during court proceedings
Conclusion
• In summary, working as a criminal justice professional allows you to serve
the community in one of its most crucial aspects (SECURITY and SAFETY)
• Probation and correctional officers are essential in facilitating rehabilitation
and reentry into society (Martin & Zettler, 2021)
• These officers ensure individuals with criminal behavior can reform and
continue with their lives as law-abiding citizens
• My call to all professions within the criminal justice system and those
aspiring to work there is that, “Uphold Justice and Fairness at all times.”
• Continued education and training are essential for professional
development

Editor's Notes

  1. One of the primary functions of agencies within the criminal justice system is to ensure the safety and security of the public. This function involves preventing and deterring criminal activities, arresting offenders, and holding them accountable for their actions. For example, law enforcement agencies, such as police departments maintain public safety by patrolling neighborhoods, responding to emergencies, and apprehending suspects. 2. Probation officers are crucial in providing advisory reports to the court during various stages of the criminal justice process. One key responsibility is providing recommendations to the court when determining bail and bond for individuals awaiting trial or sentencing. For instance, probation officers may conduct an assessment of an individual's criminal history, risk factors, and relations with the community to provide the court with information to make informed decisions about bail or bond. If an individual has a low risk of flight or reoffending, the probation officer may recommend release on bail with such conditions as electronic monitoring or regular check-ins with the probation office. They also supervise convicts if they are placed on probation or parole instead of serving a custodial sentence. As such they monitor the offender's compliance with court-ordered conditions, providing support and guidance, and enforcing the terms of their supervision.
  3. Qualifications play a crucial role in the effectiveness and success of probation officers in carrying out their duties within the criminal justice system. The importance of qualifications lies in ensuring that probation officers possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to effectively supervise offenders, promote rehabilitation, and uphold public safety. For instance, academic qualifications are important because education provides probation officers with a strong foundation in criminal justice principles, theories, and practices. They also gain the essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Higher levels of education can also demonstrate a commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. Additionally, training and certification programs provide probation officers with specialized knowledge and skills specific to their role, including risk assessment, case management, motivational interviewing, and crisis intervention. The certification demonstrates competency and adherence to professional standards.
  4. After gaining significant experience and demonstrating leadership abilities, probation officers may be promoted to supervisory roles such as senior probation officer, probation supervisor, or probation manager. The promotion allows them to oversee the work of other probation officers, manage caseloads, and assist in program development and implementation. For example, a probation officer with ten years of experience may be promoted to a senior probation officer role where they will supervise a team of probation officers, conducts performance evaluations, and provides guidance and support to newer officers. Those with leadership skills can advance to managerial roles if they exhibit strong leadership skills and management capabilities within their agencies. They oversee the operations, staff, and budget of the probation department, and may have broader responsibilities for strategic planning and policy development.
  5. Corrections officers are responsible for supervising inmates within correctional facilities, including prisons, jails, and detention centers. This role involves ensuring inmates adhere to established protocols, procedures, and standards of conduct to promote a secure and controlled environment.
  6. Qualifications are crucial in determining whether a person can work in a certain position. For example, physical fitness is essential for corrections officers to perform their duties effectively. This qualification derives its logic from the reasoning that their occupation may require them to respond to emergencies, restrain inmates, as part of maintaining order within the facility. Passing a physical fitness assessment ensures that corrections officers have the physical strength, agility, and endurance required to carry out their responsibilities safely. Therefore, candidates applying for a corrections officer position must undergo a physical fitness assessment as part of the hiring process. The assessment includes running, push-ups, sit-ups, and obstacle courses to evaluate their fitness, muscular strength, and overall physical condition. Passing the physical fitness assessment demonstrates that they possesses the physical capabilities necessary to perform the duties of a corrections officer effectively.
  7. Emphasizing rehabilitation in the corrections system are indicative of a more inclusive and progressive approach. This shift suggests a move away from punitive measures toward strategies aimed at addressing underlying issues, promoting rehabilitation, and facilitating successful reintegration into society. In recent years, society has increasingly recognized the limitations of traditional punitive approaches within the corrections system. This trend has greatly supported rehabilitation and reentry programs. For instance, instead of focusing too much on on punishment, correctional facilities may offer educational programs, vocational training, substance abuse treatment, and reentry support services to address the root causes of criminal behavior and reduce recidivism. Rehabilitation program within the prison system focus on providing inmates with opportunities for education, skill development, and counseling to prepare them for successful reintegration into society upon release.

For example, they are expected to conduct thorough investigations into criminal activities. This responsibility involves gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and victims, analyzing crime scenes, and collaborating with other agencies for purposes of gathering information. If a crime such as burglary occurs, law enforcement officers have the authority to investigate the crime by collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses or even analyzing any available surveillance footage to identify the perpetrators. They also apprehend individuals suspected of committing crimes. This authority allows them to detain suspects, especially when they have probable cause to believe that an individual has committed a crime.
  9. Law enforcement officers' salaries can vary significantly based on several factors, including their rank within the agency and their years of experience in the field. For example, higher-ranking officers, such as sergeants, lieutenants, and captains, receive higher salaries than entry-level officers because of their increased responsibilities and leadership roles within the agency. Additionally, officers receive raises based on their tenure, performance evaluations, and completion of advanced training or certifications. These structures are crucial to motivate officers to perform better and undertake career advancement opportunities to enhance their service to the public. On the part of qualifications, law enforcement requires competence and ability to perform the duties assigned. For instance, physical fitness is important for law enforcement officers because they often encounter physically demanding situations and must perform rigorous tasks as part of their duties. Maintaining a high level of physical fitness ensures the officers perform their duties effectively and safely. They must possess strength and stamina to pursue suspects, apprehend individuals, and respond to emergencies.
  10. Job security is paramount in law enforcement. It provides officers with stability, confidence, and peace of mind in their careers. Subsequently, the stability allows officers to focus on their duties without worrying about the uncertainty of employment. Therefore, communities benefit from consistent law enforcement services. Law enforcement should also utilize career advancement opportunities to secure more stability in their employment. For instance, pursuing leadership development increases an officer’s chances of promotion and opportunity to serve the community better. The opportunities broaden their career options and enhance their understanding of complex issues in law enforcement.
  11. The criminal justice system emphasizes the importance of ensuring a safe environment where individuals can thrive socially, economically, and politically. It acknowledges that security issues can hinder growth and development within communities. They understand that security issues, such as crime and violence impact not only public safety but also economic opportunities and political stability. This argument derives its rationale form the understanding that neighborhoods with crime and violence often have residents who feel unsafe leaving their homes. Such issues lead social isolation and decreased community engagement. Additionally, businesses will be hesitant to invest in the area due to safety concerns, limiting economic opportunities and job openings for residents.
  12. Exploring the various opportunities within the field of criminal justice is crucial for individuals aspiring to pursue a career in this field. By considering the diverse range of positions available, individuals can identify roles that align with their interests, skills, and career goals. Such elements lead to greater career satisfaction, fulfillment, and overall well-being.
  13. Probation and correctional officers are at the forefront of maintaining security and safety within the community by supervising individuals with criminal backgrounds and ensuring they adhere to legal requirements and conditions. For example, probation officers diligently monitor individuals on probation to ensure they comply with court-ordered conditions. Enforcing such conditions contributes to public safety by reducing the risk of reoffending and minimizing potential harm to the community. Additionally, the officers facilitate the rehabilitation and reentry of individuals with criminal behavior into society. They provide support, guidance, and access to resources that aid in the process of rehabilitation and promote successful integration back into the community. For instance, overseeing programs within a prison facility that focus on vocational training and education for inmates prepares inmates for successful reentry into society upon release and reduces the likelihood of recidivism.
