Ask Not What AI Can Do For You - Nov 2023 - Slideshare.pptxD2L Barry
This document discusses the potential roles of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. It begins with a survey asking readers about their role, experience with distance education and AI tools. It then discusses how AI could be used to assist educators by automating certain repetitive tasks like writing quiz questions, lesson plans, letters of reference, and grading assignments. This would allow educators to focus on relationship building and creative thinking. The document also discusses concerns about AI and argues it is best used to enhance rather than replace human roles. It shares D2L's views that learning is a human experience that can be supported by technology.

A DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK FOR A CONVERSATIONAL AGENT TO EXPLORE MACHINE LEARNIN...mlaij
This study aims to introduce a discussion platform and curriculum designed to help people understand how
machines learn. Research shows how to train an agent through dialogue and understand how information
is represented using visualization. This paper starts by providing a comprehensive definition of AI literacy
based on existing research and integrates a wide range of different subject documents into a set of key AI
literacy skills to develop a user-centered AI. This functionality and structural considerations are organized
into a conceptual framework based on the literature. Contributions to this paper can be used to initiate
discussion and guide future research on AI learning within the computer science community.

Leading Change at Project Chrsalis (M4A16)blittle18
1) The document discusses establishing urgency for educational reform at Project Chrysalis school according to Kotter's eight steps of change. It proposes adopting iPod Touch devices to increase collaboration, creative thinking, and student achievement.
2) Researchers like Daggett and Pink argue that education must adapt to changing times and focus more on right-brain skills. Mobile devices can help make learning more relevant and foster student-centered learning.
3) Short term benefits of iPods include blogging, individualized and mobile learning through field studies. Long term the school aims to anchor these new approaches into its culture through continuous improvement and commitment to reform.

Debbi Boden, Jane Secker and Ruth Stubbings on behalf of the CILIP CSG Information Literacy Group discuss Information Literacy - terminology, who should teach individuals to be information literate, the role of all library sectors in this area at Umbrella 2005.
1) The document defines AI literacy as a set of competencies that enables individuals to critically evaluate AI technologies, communicate effectively with AI, and use AI as a tool.
2) It proposes 15 competencies across 5 themes - what AI is, what it can do, how it works, how it should be used, and how people perceive it.
3) The competencies focus on understanding intelligence, different types of AI, their strengths/weaknesses, how machine learning and data work, ethics, and interpreting AI systems.
Thank you for the thoughtful discussion. Collaborating and sharing perspectives is so important for progress. While challenges remain, focusing on students' needs and empowering educators gives me hope that learning will continue to evolve in positive ways.
Artificial intelligence works by ingesting large amounts of labeled training data to analyze for patterns and correlations. These patterns are used to make predictions about future states. There are four types of AI: 1) Reactive Machines that perform basic operations without learning; 2) Limited Memory types that can store previous data/predictions to make better predictions; 3) Theory of Mind types that begin to interact with human thoughts and emotions; and 4) hypothetical Self Aware types with independent intelligence. The document discusses several applications of AI including healthcare for drug development, robotics for delivery, and education for automating administrative tasks.
Treasures and traps of this open learning worlddennis_mckoy
The document discusses the open world of learning using the WE-ALL-LEARN model as a framework. It describes how the availability of open educational resources, tools, and a participatory learning culture allows all learners to benefit from lifelong learning opportunities. However, it also notes challenges like the digital divide and need for quality assurance. Overall, the document advocates for embracing open and blended learning models to ensure no one is left behind in this new world of learning.
The document discusses how technology and digital tools are bringing about a paradigm shift in education, and how teachers can successfully face this digital challenge. It notes that technology may change how we teach and learn, communicate, and use language. However, teachers should focus on developing students' digital literacy and critical thinking skills, and see technology as a tool rather than getting distracted by it. Facing the digital challenge requires teachers to get help from others, create a digital literacy plan, and leverage tools to foster collaboration.
THE EDUCATION WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE DEFICIENCIES OF ITS APPLIC...Faga1939
This article aims to present how artificial intelligence can be used in the development of education with the benefits and risks related to its use, as well as showing the deficiencies in the application of Artificial Intelligence in teaching processes in Brazil. In the words of the computer scientist who coined the term, John McCarthy, Artificial Intelligence is “the science and engineering of producing intelligent systems”. It is the technology used to make machines behave like humans when performing manual activities, making decisions, understanding data and even creating content (most recent innovation). Machines are equipped with data and programmed to learn from it, dividing information into layers and recognizing patterns. What are the benefits and risks of Artificial Intelligence in education? Artificial Intelligence can help teachers prepare questions, plan classes and evaluate student performance. For the student, AI makes research and obtaining knowledge easier. Developing the ability to correctly handle this technology will be another task for the teacher in the context of digital culture. Today, the role of the teacher is not that of a mere transmitter of information, but rather that of a mediator and supporter in the learning process. Artificial Intelligence can bring improvements to the educational process, but it also brings risks and challenges to educational institutions. It can be stated that Artificial Intelligence will bring immeasurable benefits to educational institutions, their managers, teachers and students at all levels and that there are risks that need to be avoided in its use. Many universities around the world still do not know what to do about the use of Artificial Intelligence in education and Brazil has major deficiencies in the application of Artificial Intelligence tools in education at all levels of education.
The document discusses natural language processing and some of the challenges involved, including ambiguity. It provides an example of an ambiguous word in Hindi ("vake") that could mean either "common" or "mango" depending on the context. It notes that disambiguation is a major challenge in natural language processing and is considered an AI-complete problem. Word sense disambiguation aims to compute the correct sense of ambiguous words in context.
Artificial intelligence is transforming higher education through personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, predictive analytics, natural language processing, automated grading, and more. However, there is still limited understanding of how AI can be effectively integrated into educational settings. This study reviewed literature on AI in higher education and identified gaps. The researchers analyzed how AI has impacted areas like personalized teaching and learning. While AI opens new possibilities, it is not yet ready to replace teachers but can augment them. AI will likely be used more in the future to help administrators, teachers, and students.

these discussions. These are:
17. British Council London Survey (April19,2024)
• Definitions: There is a clear need for a set of agreed definitions so that when we
discuss Al in ELT, we are talking about the same type of technology.
• Pedagogy: AI may have the potential to be transformative, but the question
remains if it will it be held back with outdated learning theory.
• Replacing humans: The majority view is that AI will not replace the need for
human teachers any time soon and may never.
• Relevance for ELT: There is some evidence that AI will be more usefully deployed
in ELT than in other disciplines, but not all are convinced by this idea.
• Teacher readiness: There is already a huge knowledge gap around digital
literacies. Addressing Al literacy will be a massive challenge.
• Motivation: Motivation remains a barrier or enabler to learning. AI does not
appear to be changing that, yet.
19. Conclusion
• Teachers need to agree on definitions of AI so we can be sure we are
referring to the same technology type. Then, principles for ethical use
of AI in ELT/L can be drawn up. It would also be helpful to list how AI
may or may not be used for specific teacher tasks. Education tends
to lag behind other sectors for many reasons, good (safeguarding,
protecting the learning process) and bad (resistance to change, power
structures, revenue concerns). Whether or not these new
technologies will bring the widespread change in education systems is
an ongoing debate.
