Pitching Ideas: How to sell your ideas to othersJeroen van Geel
Learn how to convince others of your UX ideas by understanding them.
We are good in designing usable and engaging products and services. We understand the user's needs and have a toolkit with dozens of deliverables. But for some reason it remains difficult to sell an idea or concept to team members, managers or clients. After this session that problem will be solved!
Selling your ideas and convincing others is one of the most undervalued assets in our field. This ranges from convincing a colleague to use a certain design pattern to selling research to your boss and convincing a client to go for your concept. You can come up with the best ideas in the world, but if it is presented in the wrong way these ideas will die a lonely dead. This is sad, because everybody can learn how to bring a message across. The main thing is that you know what to pay attention to.
In this session I will take you on a journey through the world of presenting ideas. We will move through the heads of clients and your colleagues, learn what their thoughts and needs are. We will move to the core of your idea and into the world of psychology.

Climate change presents both risks and opportunities for businesses. McKinsey estimates $9-12 trillion in annual investment opportunities by 2030 to transition to a net zero economy. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and UN agree that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through decarbonizing energy systems, industrial processes, and pursuing carbon neutral and carbon negative strategies. Transitioning to renewable energy and low-carbon solutions could spark a new climate revolution comparable to the industrial revolution.

2. There are opportunities for growth by focusing on expanding student populations through unique academic offerings, online/hybrid programs, and simplicity.
3. This decade may see distressed colleges close unless institutions realistically assess their situation and think boldly about new, mission-consistent approaches to ensure long-term sustainability.

Proposals by Corporate Investors
Public companies invite proposals from their shareholders on the company’s response to its stakeholders. Corporate investors, led by religious groups and socially responsible investors, have increasingly been bringing forth environmental and social proposals. Often companies work with proponents of these proposals to arrive at mutually agreeable outcomes.
The growth in these proposals has been tremendous—from around 7% to 32% between 2004 and 2007—counting those that garnered at least 15% votes. Among specific issues that these proposals address are companies’ sexual orientation policies, pollution policies, labor policies, efforts on climate change, and political contributions. Some of these proposals find mention in the following year’s annual or corporate sustainability report, while some others result in specific agreements with the company. Proposals can be resubmitted, so it’s in the companies’ interest to take proposals seriously.
Two major examples come from Exxon. The Sisters of St. Dominic were the lead filers on a proposal, which got 31% support, asking for greenhouse gas reduction. A different proposal from an individual investor, which got 27% support, asked for the development of renewable energy sources. Another instance is Domini Social Investments’ proposal asking Home Depot to produce a report on its sustainably harvested lumber. Home Depot agreed to publish on its Web site its wood purchasing policy, including quantitative information.
“Corporate investors . . . have increasingly been bringing forth environmental and social proposals.”

But sometimes you or your organization will want to consider something different, and you will need to write a proposal for that work. Generally, proposals are created for projects that are longer or more expensive than routine w.

Should Everyone Go to College – Rhetorical Analysis
Education is believed to be the key to success. It is considered a smart investment associated with a number of benefits including earning more money and job satisfaction among others. Higher education is beneficial but may not be a smart investment for those attending it. Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill argue that a college degree should not be a must to everyone. The enormous variation existing in the return to education based on several factors such as the field of study and institution attended among others are some factors to consider when thinking of higher education as a must investment. Despite the positive return on education, higher education may not be a smart investment to everyone. Student should be allowed to choose wisely their postsecondary education to ensure that they fully benefit from their choice. (In thesis, clarify the strength of ethos, pathos, logos in the article.)
Target Audience(no subtitle)
Going for higher education is valuable though it may not be the best investment for all young people who intend to college. Benefits of attending college include improved overall wellbeing and reduced crime among others. As much higher education is valuable, it may not benefit all those who attend it equally. Policymakers who are the target audience should acknowledge the fact that higher education does not equally benefit all those who attend it. They should consider the rate of return as well as variations in rate of return on education before considering it the best investment. Owen and Sawhill illustrate why higher education is not necessarily a smart investment for everyone by focusing on rate of return. They illustrate how variation in the school attended, career chosen, and graduation affect the rate of return on education. The use rhetorical appeals to convince the policymakers that attending college may be a disservice to some students.
Rhetorical Appeals
Logos
The authors use logos to convince policymakers that attending college is beneficial but does not equally benefit all students. They illustrate the benefits of attending higher education by stating the gap that exists in annual earnings between college graduates and high school graduates that is quite appealing. A college graduates working full time should earn $15,000 more than a high school graduate. However, this is not the case because from previous studies, the rate of return for attending an additional year of school is approximately 10%. This means that an individual aged 23-25 years old attending college for four years should earn $12,000 more than a high school graduate on a median earning of $30,000 though it less than what is expected (p.209). Additionally, a research by Hamilton Project indicates that the gap in the earnings grows to $46,500 by age 50. This is a clear indication that investing in college is valuable.
However.

The document provides guidance on sourcing projects for consulting clients. It discusses identifying prospects through existing clients, low-hanging fruit such as alumni connections, and dream clients with no existing connection. Maintaining existing clients through good communication and expanding relationships is key. Outreach should focus on understanding prospects' challenges and painting a picture of how working with the consulting group can help them succeed. Effective scoping of projects includes defining a clear question, timeline, and deliverables agreed upon by both parties. Collecting feedback from clients and students can help improve the process over time.
This document discusses the importance of financial literacy for children and provides tips for parents. It recommends that parents guide their children with consistent lessons in managing finances through proper habits. Education is strongly linked to higher financial literacy, with post-graduates scoring the highest. Those at most risk of low financial literacy are youth, unemployed/students, low-income individuals, and poorly educated people. The document advises avoiding credit cards, loans and debts for as long as possible and living within one's means through budgeting. It also recommends showing restraint with extra money, managing funds well, and long-term investing in passionate industries or companies.
