This is my slide deck from my session at the North Carolina Reading Conference last week in Raleigh, NC. I do staff development to schools and districts all over the country about best practices in literacy instruction. This topic is one of my most requested.
This document discusses ways to inculcate reading habits among students. It notes that teachers should orient students towards good books and characteristics of good reading. It also notes that the weak education system and emphasis on entrance examinations has led to indirect problems with developing reading habits in students. Some strategies discussed for students include independent reading which is associated with benefits like greater vocabulary, content knowledge, comprehension, verbal fluency, and higher achievement test scores.
Curriculum workshops took place in autumn 2018. Videos on aspects of Ofsted’s curriculum research were produced http://ow.ly/frvY30n1Qfm. These presentation slides accompany the videos and discuss the importance of the curriculum in schools and early years.
This document provides tips for how to effectively read textbooks. It begins by defining what a textbook is and listing common symptoms readers experience when struggling to understand textbook material. It then explains that textbooks are difficult but not meant for pleasure reading. The main section outlines a 7-step process for reading textbooks: 1) examine the cover, 2) review the table of contents, 3) preview the chapter, 4) review captions, 5) write down bold texts, 6) compare questions to bold texts, and 7) immediately review and recite the material. It emphasizes the importance of reviewing right after reading and encourages readers to not be hard on themselves if textbooks are challenging and to seek help from others reading the same material.

The document outlines the key qualities that make a good mathematics textbook. It discusses that a textbook should not only provide information but act as a teaching instrument and guide. It then lists several important qualities under different categories such as physical features, author qualifications, organized content, clear language, and illustrative exercises. Overall, the document emphasizes that a high quality mathematics textbook should be well-made, written by experts, logically organized, easy to understand, and include helpful exercises and examples.
This document discusses pedagogy and effective teaching models and strategies. It defines pedagogy as beliefs about how best to teach based on how children learn. It outlines three ways of thinking about teaching: teaching relationships, teaching models, and reflection. It discusses teaching models as tools for defining content, learning strategies, and social interactions. Examples of models taught include extracting information, memorizing, building hypotheses, and cooperative tasks. It also covers general teaching knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, principles of learning and constructing knowledge, emphasizing active learning and problem-solving over memorization.

Independent learning involves a learner acquiring knowledge through their own efforts, developing inquiry and critical thinking skills. The teacher acts as a facilitator, mentor, and guide by providing resources and feedback to support learning, while allowing learners autonomy over what and how they learn. True independent learning frees learners from rigid learning experiences. Promoting independent learning includes giving students choices over their learning, encouraging collaboration and group work, and involving students in planning and reflecting on their learning.
The document outlines a scheme for evaluating English as a second language textbooks based on 4 assumptions: that the textbooks use up-to-date teaching methods, provide guidance for non-native English speaking teachers, meet the needs of language learners, and consider relevant socio-cultural environments. It then provides examples of criteria for evaluating textbooks, such as how they teach pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing skills. The document stresses that the evaluation criteria can be adapted based on the intended students and curriculum goals.
Collaborative learning activity involves learners working together in order to complete a task. Collaboration increases the opportunities a student has to use the target language, and thereby develop their skills in it. Employ teaching and learning strategies and collaborative activities in your classroom and be an innovative teacher.
Objective of student engagement in the school
1. Maximize learning in the classroom
2. Develop healthy learning environment in the classroom
3. Promotes meaningful learning
4. Monitor students learning outcome
5. Avoid monotonous, boredom, laziness , passive learning environment in the classroom

Using the PicCollage App for Reading ComprehensionJennifer Jones
Creation apps are the hottest thing in the classroom right now. Most teachers have PicCollage on their phone for saving memories with pictures from the camera roll. But, how many teachers are using PicCollage for learning? Or, better yet, turning the app usage over to students? I created this presentation for my session at the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute in Greenville, North Carolina. Teachers will learn why Pic Collage is the perfect app for digital creations, see several examples of PicCollage for reading comprehension and create a PicCollage f their own.

50 Shades of the Common Core for ELA: Critical Thinking for AllJennifer Jones
The document summarizes key aspects of the Common Core literacy model and recommendations for implementing it in schools. It discusses the Common Core's emphasis on close reading, use of evidence from texts, and higher-level thinking over personal connections. It provides examples of text-based questions and analyzing responses using evidence from stories. The takeaway is that teachers should focus on having students closely analyze and evaluate texts using evidence, and provide strategies for doing so like two-column notes, rather than what students should know from informational texts.

The document also discusses measuring text complexity, considering factors like vocabulary, structure and coherence. It emphasizes the importance of close reading techniques and having students struggle through difficult texts with teacher support.
Fifty Shades of the Common Core for ELA: RevisedJennifer Jones
This is a revised version of my original Fifty Shades of the Common Core presentation. Slides 51-59 about text complexity are new based on a recent presentation I attended by Timothy Shanahan, one of the authors of the Common Core for ELA.
This is the presentation I did for the staff at my own elementary school (90 minutes). After this presentation, teachers felt they had the tools, strategies and conceptual understanding to move on with teaching "the Common Core way" not to mention motivation and empowerment. This presentation not only covers the anchor standards and strands of the Common Core for ELA, but emphasizes the 3 shifts in the Common Core that are vital for student success in school and life. Here is the hand-out that goes with it: http://goo.gl/gzUny
